INVOLVEMENT

Being involved in the well-being and advancement of ones own community is the best gift someone can give!

During my time at Niagara College, the Dental Hygiene program offered many opportunities for us to become involved in the community. These included:

Long Term Care –
Meadows of Dorchester

September 2019 – Current

Niagara Falls

Here we provide basic oral screenings where we document any concerns, note any necessary referrals that should be made, educate the residents on ways to improve their oral health, and provide minimal oral hygiene care through denture cleaning and fluoride varnish application.

Oral Hygiene Education for Niagara College PSW Students

November 2019

Welland

Here we educated the PSW students on the importance of oral care, the basics of oral disease etiology, how to perform an oral cancer screen on their patients, and how to prevent oral disease. Our hope is that this will encourage them to incorporate an oral scan into their routine and refer their patients when necessary, since their patients may rarely visit a dental office.

Segue Clinic

March 2020

Niagara Falls

For our community health class, a few of my fellow students and I performed a health promotion at the Segue Clinic in Niagara Falls. Our goal was to aid those overcoming addiction in improving their oral care by inviting them to learn about common oral complications such as dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, and tooth decay. We then provided them with knowledge on how to either prevent or treat these complications.

Prior Community Involvement

Prior to my time at Niagara College, I became involved in the community through the following:

Heart Strong Team Member / Floor Supervisor

January 2017 – August 2017

St. Catharines

At the Brock Niagara Centre for Health & Well-Being, I volunteered every Friday in the summer after having volunteered through the winter for a course at Brock. Here I assisted in the orientation process, supervised seniors during their workouts, assisted members with any questions they had, helped them through MD prescribed exercises, and helped clean and close the gym.
