Hi There!

My name is Cassondra Smith. Life has brought me down a long and winding road when it comes to education and future professional desires, but I have finally arrived at where I belong. A dental hygienist is what I aspire to be and is therefore what I continue to strive towards! The purpose of this portfolio it to give readers a little extra insight into who I am as a woman, a student, and a dental hygienist. This portfolio will not only highlight my strengths, but will also reflect on difficult times I endured, collectively molding myself into the hygienist I am today. Overall, this portfolio outlines my journey towards becoming a dental hygienist and will hopefully one day include my journey through practice once I am officially a registered dental hygienist!

Why Dental Hygiene?

From initial interest, to current passion!

Aside the very typical desire to be teacher back in elementary school, dentistry was the first profession that seriously sparked my interest. I grew up loving the sciences and always desiring to help people, and early into high school knew that I was meant for the health care field. My initial interest in dentistry came from my godfather Dr. Corey Felix who continuously excelled in the dental field through his education, his extensive research, his 5 years of service as a dentist in the Canadian Forces, and his continued work over the past decade. With the minimal information I had at the time, I felt that as a dentist, I could help give people a beautiful smile that could ultimately fuel their confidence. I therefore continued to university, however by the end, and through much more research, my interests shifted from dentistry to dental hygiene. What solidified my confidence in that dental hygiene was the career for me was that I would have a better chance to build a relationship with my clients through regular hygiene care. Knowing that I had always had the desire to teach, this felt like my opportunity to educate and motivate my clients on the importance of oral health, care and hopefully inspire them to continue their oral care beyond the office; and I also still hope to give my clients a smile that can ultimately fuel their confidence!

Values
>

I value the delivery of thorough, high quality, client centered care, with a basis of knowledge that is continually enhanced, while fostering a work environment that motivates my team members.

Mission
>

My mission is to provide the best possible client centered care I can, while also providing education and motivation to promote continued oral care beyond the office.

Vision
>

My vision is to invoke trust in my clients, be the one that positively impacts their view of dental hygiene, and ultimately inspires them to truly value their oral self-care!

Soft Skills

Organization

Organization is one strength that I have always possessed. When it comes to creating notes and building my clinical reference binder, keeping track of files, or planning out projects, my organizational skills have always aided in completing these tasks. For example, I organized getting my class grad hoodies, and on countless occasions, if anyone ever needed anything in class or clinic, they knew exactly who to come to!

Communication

Communication is another strength of mine for when talking to anyone whether in clinic, class, or out in my everyday life, I always talk very clearly and ensure that I receive adequate input from whoever I am speaking to. Working throughout my life has continually strengthened this in me to the point where I always put great effort in my engagement with others. For example, talking to clients in clinic has always been very easy for me from the start, and when it came to calling physicians offices and pharmacies, communication over the phone was already natural for me.

Goals

  •         To maintain my honor roll status while in school

  •         To graduate Niagara Colleges Dental Hygiene Program

  •         To pass the NDHCB Exam – National Dental Hygiene Competency Board Exam

  •         To find a full time job as an RDH in an office that promotes innovation and education
